Dropsy: An old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation
of excess water.
In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would
be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema
due to congestive heart failure.
Edema is often more prominent in the lower legs and feet toward the end of the
day as a result of pooling of fluid from the upright position usually maintained
during the day. Upon awakening from sleeping, people can have swelling around
the eyes referred to as periorbital edema.
The Middle English dropesie came through the Old French hydropsie from the Greek
hydrops which in turn came from the Greek hydor meaning water.

On 7 Apr 1882 he was a labourer in Tovil, Kent.30 Augustin Theodore Sales
In a previous version, Augustin Theodore Sales, bap 13 Feb 1853 in Leigh, was
attached to this John. John Doley had him attached to a different John (baptised
1830) with Frances Dyer, but this incorrect link was discovered in May 2007,
when the correct John Sales with Frances Dyer was shown to be associated with
Goudhurst, and not Leigh. However, keeping Augustin Theodore attached to John
Sales and Frances Dyer meant that they had two children baptised on different
dates in 1853 - not exactly usual.
A check in the births in the Civil Registration showed that Augustin Theodore's
birth was registered in Sevenoaks Registration District, while all of John Sales'
and Frances Dyer's other children were born/baptised in Goudhurst (Cranbrook
Registration District) and Horsmonden (Tonbridge Registration District). Sevenoaks
Registration District included Penshurst, whose parish is immediately next door
to that of Leigh.
Subsequently, it was discovered that Augustin Theodore's parents were John Sales
and Frances Simmons, the latter's father, William, being a cricket ball maker
in Leigh. He would have worked at Duke's cricket ball factory. It is not known
where this John came from. John Sales and Frances Dyer were married on 21 Jul
1851 in St Margaret, Horsmonden, Kent.23,31 Witnesses Thomas Dann and
Sophiea Burton, both mad their mark. John signed, but Frances made her mark.
