William Sales was born before 12 Jun 1791 in Marden, Kent.16 He was baptized on 12 Jun 1791 in St Michael and All Angels, Marden, Kent.17 On 6 Jun 1841 he was an agricultural labourer in Marden, Kent.18 He was also known as William Sells on 30 Jun 1841.18 This William is the closest possible match in the census to Thomas and Mary Sales' son, baptised in Marden. On 30 Mar 1851 he was a Chelsea pensioner in Marden, Kent.16 Chelsea Pensioners could be in- or out-pensioners. King James II introduced a system of distribution of army pensions in 1689, while the Royal Hospital at Chelsea was still under construction. Wikipedia has this to say: "The pension was to be made available to all soldiers who had been injured in service, or who had served for more than 20 years." When the hosptial was finished, in-pensioners lived at the Royal Hospital at Chelsea. Out-pensioners received their pension in their normal home. On 7 Apr 1861 he was a Chelsea pensioner (soldier) in Marden, Kent.19 William definitely belongs to Thomas and Mary Sales, as found in the baptisms in the relevant Marden register. However, locating him after this is problematic. We have found census records of a William Sells which closely match the details we have found on William Sales.
