William Sales was born on 21 Nov 1810.⁶¹ He was baptized on 2 Dec 1810 in St Mary, Speldhurst, Kent and St John the Evangelist chapel, Groombridge.⁶¹ He was also known as William Seals on 2 Dec 1810.²³ As recorded in baptism register. On 6 Jun 1841 he was an agricultural labourer in Tunbridge Wells, Speldhurst, Kent.¹⁸⁶ He was also known as William Sale on 6 Jun 1841.¹⁸⁶ On 13 Jun 1859 he was a labourer.¹⁸⁷ From his son James Sale's marriage with Susanna Brown. On 20 Jun 1859 he was a labourer.¹⁸⁸ From his daughter Eliza Sale's marriage with George Turley.

William Sales and Frances Shoebridge were married on 16 Sep 1832 in St Mary, Speldhurst, Kent.¹⁸⁹ This is the most likely match. The first marriage usually occurred when people were 20 or so. Witnesses William Worsell and Jane Challen. William and Frances signed their names. They appeared in the census on 6 Jun 1841 in Cottage No 2, Spring Bottom, Tunbridge Wells, Speldhurst, Kent.¹⁸⁶ Frances Shoebridge was born about 1810. Estimated from marriage date. She died in 1847 in Tonbridge Registration District, Kent.¹⁹⁰ (December quarter.) This death record might alternately refer to her daughter, Frances. This will be checked by ordering the certificate. William Sales and Frances Shoebridge had the following children:
