66. Phoebe Esther COPPOCK was born on 19 Oct 1874 in 42 Scott Street, Plaistow, London.^151,291 1901 census describes birthplace as Canning Town. She appeared in the census in 1881 in 2 Pragel Street, Plaistow, Essex.¹⁴⁹ She died on 11 Jul 1950 in Forest Gate, London.^151,156

Phoebe was a scholar living with her parents in 1881 at 2 Pragel Street West Ham.

She & John were both living at 11 North Street Barking when they were married at Barking Parish Church in September 1895. Their second child was born 7 months after their marriage. A previous child, born out of wedlock, died before they were married.
They had 9 children all told.

Like her sister Louise, Phoebe was violent towards her children. On one occasion she broke the bannisters to get something to hit one of them for coming home late. Perhaps both sisters took after their mother who had frequent arguments with their
father.

Phoebe & John & family were freguently moving house to avoid the rent collector as they were always hard up. Sometimes they only moved very short distances, just around the corner or along the street, to wherever there was an empty house.

John had various jobs: at one time a gravedigger at the City of London cemetery (DS has his reference from here); another as an ostler looking after the horses that pulled the trams (DS has a photo'); and, the one that ruined him, looking after the
horses at a brewery. The employees were allowed to drink as much as they liked from a tap in the wall and, of course, they did! At the end of the day, when the horses had to go back to the stables, they found their own way as the men were all the
worse for wear! But Phoebe said that her husband was never any trouble, he just went to sleep!

John Henry died of cirrhosis of the liver aged about 56 in 1926.
