36. Rose Sales was born on 4 Aug 1862 in Goudhurst, Kent.80,159 She was baptized on 29 Mar 1863 in St Mary the Virgin, Goudhurst, Kent.80 She was also known as Rosa Sales on 2 Apr 1871.159 She appeared in the census on 2 Apr 1871 in Curtisden Green, Goudhurst, Kent.159 She appeared in the census on 3 Apr 1881 in 19 St Peter Street, Winchester, Hampshire.160 Described as "Boarder" and "Inmate of Home". This was an "Industrial School" called St Mary's Home. A court order was made for a juvenile who had not yet comitted a crime, but who were destitute, to place the juvenile in an industrial school some distance away from where they lived, on a day or boarding basis. The inmates were given a basic education, and trained in useful occupations: the boys were taught woodwork and so on, the girls were taught needlework and household duties. Thus they were taught to be "industrious" rather than to turn to crime. Discipline was very strict, to teach the youths right from wrong. She was also known as Sarah Sturgess on 31 Mar 1901. It is not clear why she is recorded as Sarah instead of Rose in this census. Perhaps it is a mistake on the part of the recorder. She appeared in the census on 31 Mar 1901 in Whymans Hut, Marden, Kent.92 She is shown as married in this census, but her husband is not present. He might have been away in service in the Boer War.

Rose Sales and George William Sturgess were married in 1884 in Southampton Registration District, Hampshire.161 (September quarter.) They appeared in the census on 5 Apr 1891 in North Road, South Stoneham, Southampton, Hampshire.162 With them was: Fred A S Athern age 7mo Boarder born Hants, Southampton. George William Sturgess was born in 1860 in [South Stoneham], Southampton, Hampshire.162,163 (March quarter.) On 5 Apr 1891 he was in South Stoneham, Southampton, Hampshire.162 He is not found in the census in 1901 in Southampton, Hampshire, or in Kent. It is likely that George Sturgess was in South Africa, fighting in the Boer War, as Rose (Sarah in the census) is described as married, and she is either visiting her brother for a short time, or staying with him while her husband is away. There is no 1901 census record for George Sturgess. Rose Sales and George William Sturgess had the following children:

Frederick Arthur Sturgess was born in 1886 in Southampton, Hampshire.92,164 (June quarter, Droxford Registration District, Hampshire.) He appeared in the census on 31 Mar 1901 in Whymans Hut, Marden, Kent.92
