He was buried on 20 Jul 1835 in St Mary, Leigh, Kent.91 William and his wife, Mary Eastland, had eight children
placed with them in the previous version of the "John Sales born about 1680"
pages. However if this had been the case, the children who were baptised from
1814 to 1823 were born when their parents were in their fifties, an unlikely
occurrence. This was picked up when we ran a 'problem list' on our genealogy
software. We have now found a suitable burial record for Mary (see her details).
It is reasonably certain that the children baptised from 1814 to 1823 belong
to William Sales and Mary Chapman, who both originally had estimated birth years
of 1790 and were married on 27 Feb 1814. Both William Sales and Mary Eastland
and William Sales and Mary Chapman were married in Tonbridge. Looking at the
information available, when William Sales and Mary Chapman were married, William
was a widower (Mary Chapman was a spinster). We think, therefore, that both
of the Williams mentioned above are the same person, and that it was this William
who took over farming at Kettles (and also Jessops) at Charcott (but now at Chiddingstone
Causeway) - William appears in the Rate Books for these farms over the correct
period. What we have done is to merge the Williams, and move the children from
1814-1823 to William Sales and Mary Chapman. If we find other evidence to refute
this, a further correction will be made. Any (polite) comments are welcome.
