Extracts from Oldham parish registers as transcribed/edited by Giles Shaw, 1889

[Extracts made by Stephen C. Wallwork. The Giles Shaw transcription was borrowed from Oldham Central Library in 1963. Notes I made during copying are in round brackets; notes added now are in square brackets. These are all the Wallwork/Wallworth entries I noted in each of the volumes below. I made notes on more, perhaps all, volumes and continued from microfilm of the register in Manchester Central Library, e.g. baptisms 1796 - 1822 on MFPR 134. I did not note beyond about 1810 since, by then, Joseph Wallwork born 1796 had moved with his employer to Ashton-under-Lyne.]

Volume 1 (Baptisms from 1558, Marriages from 1598, Burials start 1558 but are missing from 20 May 1567 to February 1578/9. Baptisms missing 27April `569 to 10 Nov 1571, 20 March 1572[?] to 5 April 1574. No bap or bur for 1580, no bur 1581, no bap or bur 1582, no bur 1585 or 1588, no bap 20 April 1591 to 1598.)

(Whole of 2nd Volume of registers in bad condition; separate years difficult to distinguish. Stated to be Cristinings Begin 1624 Ends 1628 but not correct because some of later date.)

[This means that also anything in the IGI for this period may be incorrect.]

vx [= ux = wife] Christopher walwarke bur. March xxixth 1629 [end of 16th page]

vx Cristofer Wolwark bur. March 1629 xxij [page 24] [Presume a duplicate entry. I am fairly sure the ‘th’ after xxix was there in the original so it makes this date more likely than xxij which would have a ‘nd’ after but had nothing. ]

Susanna fill Robte wolwarke bap. 9th April 1630

A child of Robte wolwarke bur jst Januarie 1630 [presume dates in old style, so 1630/1]

Robte fill of Robte Walwork bap. August xxviij 1636

(From end of March 1638 to 1653 - end of 3rd volume, Registers very imperfect with many omissions, even whole years missed out.) [This is true of most registers round about the time of the Civil War, so most family trees are likely to have gaps here, unless information is found in alternative sources like wills.]

Vol. 4 Bap, Mar. Bur 1653

(Registers begin to be very imperfect 1657, many months being omitted.) [The effect of the turmoil during the protectorate.]

Vol. 5, Bap, Mar, Bur 1660

[Seen to end of volume, i.e. end of 1661 (March) and no further records of Wallwork bap. mar or bur. Also no mention in whole volume of Wallwork fold - or, at least, none noticed. The map ‘Oldham as it appeared in 1756', previously sent, is at the front of this volume.]

[I appear not to have made notes on volumes 6 to 21, but presume they are other types of parochial record since what follows, from volume 22 onwards, appears to continue the date sequence without a gap]

Vol. 22 Bap, Mar, Bur 1662-1683

Marriage May 31st 1664 Edmund Tetlow of Coldhurst tooke to wife Elizabeth Holliwell of Pikehouse in Rochdale pish and was Married by Mr wallworke Curate of Ouldham.

(Marriages from 8th April 1667 to 1674 not entered)

(Burials 1667 not entered after April 12th.)

(Bur. 1668 begin June 8th)

(From Oct 1669 all entries very irregular)

This discontinuance in the Register was made by the careles or wilfull neglect of Henry Whittaker, then clerk of the Parochial Chapel of Oldham, for which, so soon as it was discovered he was turned out of his place by Jo Lake D.D. Rector

of Prestwich cum Oldham”

(Entry previous to this statement was April 5th 1679, next after was Aug 8th 1681 - SCW)

(Then follow retrospective dates in miscellaneous order - SCW)

(Statement repeated after mar and bur also. Records restarted Bap. 1679)

(Note 1683/4 Feb and March about 6 burials in church porch because of “hard ffrost & deep in the ground”)

Vol.23 Bap, Mar, Bur 1684-1691

26 Dec. 1738 Hannah Daughter of John Wallwork of Magot lane Junr Carpenter by Eliz. ux

[If he is junior, perhaps the John on Hagg-Yate is senior, or is there a senior John we don’t know about? This being the first mention of junior may just be because of a new incumbent.]

22 Feb 1740 Bettey Daughter of John Wallwork of Maygate lane Carpenter by Eliz. ux

Vol 35 Baptisms 1745 - 1747

(At end of 1745 - March - John Wallwork signed as one of the Churchwardens, but not at the end of 1746.) [This could be either of the JWs. The fact that 1745 ended in March suggests that Giles Shaw is sticking to the original dating of the register in which the year ended on March 24th until 1751 when it ended on 31 December.]

2 January 1746[/47] John son of John Wallwork of Hagg-yate Yeoman by Anne his wife.

[I think this is the last mention of him and I don’t have his burial in my notes of this register. I may have missed it in copying or he may have been buried elsewhere, or just forgotten by the incumbent.]

Vol.52 Marriages 1734 - 1759

(John Wallwork signed as one of the three Churchwardens at end of 1744 but not at end of 1743. This is almost certainly the first appearance.)

26 Jan 1748[/49] John Wallwork (the older) of Maygate lane and Ruth Lees of the same place, widow.

27 May 1750 John Wallwork (the younger) of Priesthill Carpinter and Sarah Needham of Northmoor, spinster.

14 Aug. 1752 Richd Wallwork of Chadderton, fuller, and Jane Holland of the same place, spinster.

(At the end of 1752 entries John Wallwork signed as one of the 3 Churchwardens)

(At end of 1754 entries (after March 25th) in this volume of the original entries John Wallwork signed as one of the 3 Churchwardens.)

25 Sept. 1759 John Wallwork, Widower and Alice Ogden, spinster, by licence

(Richd Dean Curate of Royton)

[I presume he was the one who solemnized the wedding. It would be interesting to see the licence, which might give more detail of this Wallwork family.]

Vol.58 Burials 1744 - 1753

[I don’t seem to have burials between the end of the volumes that had bap., mar., and bur. together (up to 1733 in Vol.31) and this vol., starting 1744.]

(John Wallwork signed as Churchwarden at end of 1745 (not at end of 1746 or 1747, but again at end of 1753 [not necessarily the same John])

10 Jan 1747[/48] Eliz wife of John Wallwork of May gate lane

31 Dec 1752 James son of John Wallwork of Priesthill

Vol.59 Burials 1754 - 1761

(John Wallwork signed as churchwarden end of 1754. Not 1755, 1756, 1757, 1758, 1759, 1760, 1761.)

[I recorded years in the margin, from vols. 59 to 64, possibly because, in the original, the year was only recorded at the beginning of each year’s records, and each entry just had day and month.]

3 Jan. 1755 William Son of John Wallwork of Priesthill. Buried from Northmoor.

6 Nov. 1756 Ruth Wife of John Wallwork of Priesthill

[This is the origin of some of the uncertainty. It was JW the older of Maygate lane who married Ruth Lees in 1748/9 and the JW that I take to be his son who is shown as of Priesthill in 1750 on his marriage to Sarah Needham. Yet here is Ruth as wife of JW of Priesthill. Has he moved in with his son, or to a nearby house, or is Maygate lane in the area of Priesthill?]

22 Nov. 1756 John Son of John Wallwork of Hagg Yate

[I wondered if JW of Hagg Yate might be ‘senior’ in 1738, so surprised to see reference to him in 1756, when JW of Maygate lane has been ‘the older’ since at least 1748. However, the 1738 JW may be still be around, since his wife Anne is buried in the next entry. Perhaps another JW was ‘senior’ in 1738. But these relationships to JW of Hagg Yate do not necessarily mean that he was still alive.]

22 Dec. 1756 Anne Wife of John Wallwork of Hagg Yate.

10 Feb 1757 Mary Daughter of John Wallwork of Priest hill.

24 Aug 1757 Thomas Son of John Wallwork of Priesthill

(Royton chapel burials start to be recorded in 1757.) [I don’t know whether this was an Anglican chapel associated with the parish church or a Nonconformist chapel because, even though the latter could perform their own baptisms and, I think, marriages, they had to go to the parish church for burials.]

15 Aug 1761 Thomas a Child of John Wallwork (the Younger) of Northmoor

[I hope you can keep track of these JWs better than I can now. There are just too many of them!]

[Another new location that I don’t know anything about. Perhaps it is on the old maps.]

(Two more references to Wallwork fold in the burial of George Wadsworth, 16th Feb 1808, and the burial of James Stott on 11th May 1808.)

26th March 1810 Samuel Son of John Wallwork of Bent

2nd December 1810 Aaron Son of James Wallwork of Intacks

[Another new location that I don’t know. The name usually means an area added at a late stage to the agricultural land of a community by cutting down woodland. Most places were getting short of land sufficient to feed the growing populations shortly before the Black Death in the mid C14.]

9th December 1810 Sally Daughter of Thomas Wallwork of aygate lane Weaver.
